Zan jolted awake and saw Keiko leaving his bedroom. He assumed that his dad had gotten up and Keiko was going to go and greet him. It was Saturday but his dad still had to go to work. Zan got two days of school off a week but his dad only got one.
Zan got up and went to the bathroom, when he was done, he joined his father in the kitchen. They talked to each other and ate donuts until Mr. Kirks had to leave. It wasn't unusual for Zan to get up early, even on weekends, because Keiko tended to jump out of bed and accidentally wake him up. Luckily he wasn't a big fan of sleeping in anyway.
After his dad left for work, Zan went to his room, got dressed and, followed by Keiko, headed out the door for a morning walk. It was a little chilly out, but they didn't mind.
Zan and Keiko eventually came to the beach. Keiko ran ahead of Zan. He ran into the water, splashing around and then ran back onto the sand and rolled around in it. Zan didn't understand why Keiko always rolled around in the sand right after getting wet, because then the sand just stuck to him, but maybe he liked it that way.
