Zan’s father hired a maid to come in during the late afternoons to clean the house and cook them dinner. On Saturdays, she had the day off so Zan and his father would go out to eat somewhere. Today, they decided to go to pizza hut. When they got there, the hostess walked them to their table, gave them menus and told them that the server would be with them shortly.
A little girl at the table next to them started whining and complaining about how she was hungry and wanted the pizza now. Her family was trying to calm her down and Zan wondered why they were putting up with that. When he was a child, if he even looked at his mom while she was eating and hoped for food, he would get hit. Watching her cook food was even worse than watching her eat it because, when she was cooking, she had the stove to use as a weapon and Zan had a large burn scar on his arm and a fear of stoves and fire to prove it.
“You alright Zan” his dad asked.
“Yeah. It’s just, how does that girl get away with that?” He looked at her and pointed.
Mr. Kirks glanced at her. “Oh. I don’ t know. I guess she’s just one of those kids who gets away with everything. Look on the bright side, at least your well behaved.”
Zan sighed. His father was sometimes really good at making him feel better about things and sometimes really bad, but at least he tried and that was enough to make him feel a little better.
