Zan leaned forward and rolled the ball into the lane. It made it to the pins, but it had rolled to the side so it only knocked down two pins. Mr. James told him that he might do better next time, but Zan's dad defended him and said that he did pretty well. Zan and his father high fived each other as he walked away from the lane and Mr. Red stepped up to take a turn.
Zan father had been invited to go bowling with some of his coworkers and he had invited Zan to tag along. Since he had nothing better to do, he agreed. The adults talked about a lot of things that he didn't understand, and they were all surprisingly good bowlers. His dad tried to keep him from feeling left out and Zan was beginning to worry that, by coming here, he might be sabotaging his father's chance to make friends.
He sat down next to his dad and watched Mr. Red. His eyes soon moved to a group of teenagers in the next lane. He had seen some of them at school, but he doubted that they would have an interest in him.
