Sitting in the park, Ellie stared out into the distance absorbing her surroundings. The sound of the leaves rustling through the wind and the birds chirping ringed through her ears. It was a peaceful sound. She sighed. The world is so beautiful so why do such bad things have to happen? She was thinking of her father. The 14th would be four months since his passing. It seemed like so long ago.. yet she still felt the pain and the horrible memories as if had happened yesterday. The sight of seeing her father in his last moments would be something she would never forget.
It was Tuesday afternoon on the 14th of March. Ellie had raced home from school but it only took her moments to figure out that something was not right. Chucking her school bag down in it's usual spot on the breakfast bar in the kitchen, Ellie noticed how quiet the house was. It was never this quiet. "Dad?" She called out. No response. She called out to him again but again, the house was filled with nothing but silence.
Grabbing her phone out of her pocket, Ellie decided to ring her father's cell. He was usually home by this time.. maybe he had just got held back at the office, Ellie told herself. The sound of his cellphone in the next room made her heart pound and goose bumps rise all over her body. Now she knew something was definitely wrong. Her father was never one to leave the house without his phone. "Dad?!" She yelled out as she ran towards the noise. It lead her to the living room, laying near the staircase was the almost lifeless body of her father. That's when everything fell apart.
Ellie hadn't realised that she had been crying until a voice nearby snapped her out of the memory asking her if she was alright. Soldiering on, she faked a smile and said, "I'm fine thanks.". She looked to see that it was..

Zan skipped threw the park with his dog, Keiko. When Keiko saw a bird, he ran after it but it flew higher. Zan called him back. "If you want to chase something, chase a stick" he told him.
Zan looked around for a stick to throw and saw a girl crying. Usually, he would have just ignored her because it was none of his business, but today was different. Today he decided to make it his business. He wasn't sure why. Maybe it was just because nobody else was there.
He walked up to her and asked her if she was ok. She would probably tell him off though. That's what upset people tended to do.

Blinking away the tears to get a clear look, Ellie realised she didn't recognise the boy standing directly in front of her. She'd seen him earlier on with his dog but hadn't thought much of it. "I'm okay," She said softly. "Thanks though.". Ellie plastered out a smile and looked just behind him at his dog. "He's cute. What his name?" She asked him, looking back towards the kind stranger.

Maybe she wasn't as upset as he thought, or maybe she was just good at hiding it. Either way, she was nice.
There was obviously something going on, but Zan decided that it was none of his business. He didn't even know her. It had been kind of stupid to approached her like that.
"Keiko" he told her, when she asked about his dog. When he heard his name, Keiko trotted over to Zan. He nudged him and Zan scratched him behind his ear.

When hearing his name, the dog approached. Ellie leaned forward so that she was closer to the dog. "Do you mind?" She asked for permission to pat the dog. He nodded giving her the go ahead. Smiling Ellie reached forward to softly pat the fur on his back. "I'm Ellie by the way." Ellie said turning to look at him.

She smiled when she started petting Keiko, and Keiko walked a few steps towered her so that she could pet her easily. Zan was glad that he had such a friendly dog. He had seen dogs who hated everyone. His dad said that they were trying to protect their masters because they didn't trust them, but Keiko trust them enough that he didn't feel the need to protect them all the time.
The girl introduced herself as Ellie. "Nice to meet you Ellie" he said, holding out his hand for a shake. "I'm Zan."

The kind stranger now had a name. Zan. She smiled and shook his hand before placing it back by her side. "So, how long have you lived around here?" Ellie asked, making conversation. She'd seem him around quite a few times before with his dog but had actually never spoken to him. He often seemed to be only with his dog, she sensed that was what he liked.

"I moved here a few months ago" he told her, “with my dad and my dog. Have you been here a while?" He had seen here a few times. She was often with friends. He didn't have any friends here, except for his dad and Keiko. He had a few other friends before but they never lasted long. Zan had been hoping that this town would be different, because he was now more experienced in communicating with other people, but so far it hadn't been. Maybe he just didn’t make enough of an effort to meet people.

She smiled slightly and nodded her head. "About seven years now so quite a while, yeah."

Zan nodded. "Yeah. The longest I've ever lived in a place was nine years, but I've met people who have claimed to live in the same town for their entire lives."
Keiko trotted off, picked up a stick and trotted back. Then Zan remembered that they were going to play fetch. He took the stick from Keiko and threw it. Zan watched him chase after it and turned back to Ellie.
